SOFT ARMOR
SARAH WONDRACK
Soft Armor is an exhibition about vulnerability and protection, delicacy and strength, attraction and repulsion. By using emotion as a hierarchy, experi- ences unfold through making. These protective layers translate as a physical place of being in a mental state. The metallic colors and transparent fabric create a feeling of vulnerability while the spikes and cushion create layers of protection. The second skin guards against unwanted negative energy. The golden cocoon acts as a nest or a place of manifestation and rest while also creating a sense of privacy; a cozy retreat to escape from the world. It serves both as an object and wearable. The shibori techniques used on the fabric replicate those found in nature and the shoulder pads mimic steel armor; however both of these pieces are soft and gentle to the touch, inviting the audience to come close while still retaining their strength and resiliency.
