PHANTOM LIMB

CHIARA WOOD

While creating this group of works, a question came to mind: “how can one recall a bodily sensation by simply looking at something?” Using botanical dyes, beeswax, hair, and found animal relics, I detached natural elements from their original contexts to create abstracted references to the physical form. Limbs, menstruation and the reproductive system are symbolized through this reorganization, pushing the works into an uncanny valley between what is lived and what is imagined.

In the end, I see these pieces as liberating extensions of the body. Functioning within their own anatomical logic, they communicate ideas that the body alone cannot. They are physical manifestations of intangible processes that exist quietly inside of the body. When engaging with these works, I hope that viewers might feel a heightened awareness of their own physicality, and of the memory, fear, and desire it holds.
